Machine Shop

Living so close to Machine Shop is dangerous..... I could easily go multiple times a week, but thankfully I have a little self-control. You truly can't go wrong with anything on the menu. Every pastry is perfectly baked, beautifully prepared, and consistently delicious. Even when there's a line, it moves surprisingly fast, so the wait is rarely long. My only tip is to go earlier in the day because once they sell out of something, it's gone. One thing I really appreciate is that the tip is already included in the price, so you never have to worry about calculating or adding one at checkout. Machine Shop is located on the ground floor of the Bok Building, which can be a little tricky to find the first time, but it's absolutely worth seeking out. They do have some seating available, though it's limited, so plan accordingly if you're hoping to stay and enjoy your pastry there.

Probably the place that I have most consistently been dunked on after mumbling about it being “overpriced”. It’s always worth the price tag. Savory pastries are incredible, beet sandwich is diabolical, caneles and cookies are perfect… and I’ll save up to try more 😭 Crossing my fingers they start a lil rewards program so us bottom feeders can convince ourselves to get a treat even more often.

Today’s seasonal selection featured a mushroom danish and a goat cheese everything croissant—both quietly spectacular. Each pastry delivered deep, earthy flavors paired with a texture that felt deliberate and rare, the kind that only comes from hands that truly understand dough. Flaky without being fragile, rich without tipping into heaviness, these bakes tasted less like trendy offerings and more like the work of the last true breadsmiths keeping their craft alive.

love their pastries! savory, sweet they have it all! food: always love their kouign-amann flaky goodness. their seasonal pastries are always fun to try. I have not gotten a loaf from here but I plan to do so soon it’s nice to pop in here for a pastry and next door for a drink! ambiance: seating is tough but bok bar lets you spread out service: always greeted by the same guy and know I will be treated to a treat after I order

Machine Shop Bakery was an absolute dream and one of the standout stops of our Philadelphia trip. I had read about this place ahead of time, but walking in exceeded every expectation. Everyone working there was incredibly hospitable, and the overall vibe was just so good. I’m a culinary teacher in the Boston area, specifically baking and pastry, and I completely nerded out being here. These pastries are truly on par with some of the French pastry I’ve had in Paris — no exaggeration. You can immediately tell how high-quality everything is, from the ingredients to the execution to the way the space is set up. The bakery is housed in a renovated vocational school, and the creative use of the space just adds to the experience. It feels thoughtful, intentional, and really special. We chatted with a couple people in line who live in Philly and said they come here regularly, which says everything — this is clearly a beloved local spot. And the pastries… wow. The orange cardamom morning bun was outstanding, the mushroom Danish was incredible, the focaccia was perfect, and the coffee cake and pecan roll were both delicious. We stopped here before a full day of walking, and it fueled us
